El Paso County declares a day in honor of soccer star Ricardo Pepi

The El Paso County Commissioners Court approved a resolution naming a "Ricardo Pepi Day" after the U.S. men's national team forward scored for PSV Eindhoven in the Dutch league opener.

The El Paso County Commissioners Court formally adopted a resolution that designates a "Ricardo Pepi Day" to celebrate the local soccer star's achievements. Pepi, born in an El Paso hospital and raised in San Elizario, featured in every United States Men's National Team match at the recent World Cup, including the round-of-32 win. He was one of two El Paso-area players on the 26-man squad, alongside Alejandro Zendejas, who was born in Juarez.

The proclamation comes a day after Pepi scored for PSV Eindhoven in a 5-1 opening-day triumph over Groningen. PSV's next fixture is scheduled for Sunday, August 30, against FC Utrecht. The resolution highlights the community's pride in Pepi's international and club successes.

Why it matters

It shows how local communities honor athletes who achieve national and international recognition.
