El-Sayed's 2012 Obama criticism resurfaces as they prepare joint Michigan rally

A 2012 op-ed in which Abdul El-Sayed criticized President Barack Obama for falling short of progressive goals has been highlighted ahead of a campaign event where Obama will appear with El-Sayed in Detroit.

Abdul El-Sayed’s 2012 one outlet's op-ed, in which he described Barack Obama’s second-term win as a compromise for progressives, has resurfaced as the two prepare to share a stage in Detroit. El-Sayed’s criticism targeted Obama’s foreign interventions, stagnant economy, and limited progress on civil-rights for Muslim Americans, while still acknowledging he voted for Obama in 2008 and 2012 and preferred him to Republican nominee Mitt Romney.

The former governor highlighted the upcoming Oct. 24 rally, where Obama will campaign for Democratic candidates in Michigan, including El-Sayed and gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson. Despite the shared appearance, Obama has not issued an official endorsement for El-Sayed, who is contesting a Senate primary against Rep. Haley Stevens. El-Sayed’s campaign did not comment on the revived op-ed or his current view of Obama’s legacy.
