Elderly brothers sentenced after keeping parents frozen for nearly 30 years
An 81-year-old man and his 70-year-old brother were convicted for preserving their parents' bodies in freezer boxes for almost three decades and later disturbing a family grave.
In the summer of 2024, investigators in Åbo discovered two concealed freezer boxes, one active, holding the remains of a couple who died of natural causes in 1994 and 1995. Their eldest son, an 81-year-old former physician with experience in the funeral industry, had taken the bodies from a hospital on two occasions and kept them frozen for almost thirty years, claiming they were to be transported to the United States.
In October 2025 the brothers, aged 81 and 70, excavated a shallow trench at the family plot, saying they wanted to improve the grave. A district court ruled they had violated the sanctity of the burial site, sentencing the older brother to three daily fines and the younger to one. The parents were finally interred at the Åbo cemetery at the end of 2025.
