Elderly Burnaby Resident Killed by Stray Bullet Linked to Nearby Shooting
An 85-year-old man was fatally struck by a stray bullet inside his Burnaby apartment, police say the shot originated from a nearby gunfire incident.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team found 85-year-old Chang Yong Cho dead in his Burnaby home on Aug. 30 after a well-being check was requested. Authorities say the bullet that killed him was likely fired during a "shots fired" episode that took place shortly after 1:30 a.m. about one block from his residence, near the intersection of 18th Avenue and Humphries Avenue. A suspect vehicle left the area before police could intervene, and the initial incident did not produce any injured victims.
Burnaby RCMP arrived at Cho's apartment roughly 15 hours later. IHIT Sgt. Freda Fong described the loss as heartbreaking and noted that a group of youths is believed to have knowledge of the shooting. Investigators are urging parents and the youths to cooperate, and are asking anyone with dash-cam or surveillance footage to come forward.
