Elderly Cork patient receives €1.2 million settlement after hospital medication error
A man in his 70s was awarded €1.2 million after a stroke caused by missed anticoagulant doses at Mercy University Hospital in Cork.
During a November 2025 admission to Mercy University Hospital in Cork for heart-failure complications, a pensioner in his 70s did not receive his prescribed anticoagulant for three days, resulting in a stroke. He was subsequently treated with emergency thrombolysis and thrombectomy at another facility, suffering facial droop, speech and mobility issues, though he is now improving with family support. The hospital’s CEO, Margaret McKiernan, read a letter of apology in court, accepting responsibility for the medication error. Counsel representing the patient, Dr John O’Mahony SC and Cian O’Mahony BL, secured a €1.2 million settlement, which Justice Leonie Reynolds approved, praising the parties’ mediation efforts.
