Elderly couple embraces home caregivers who become friends and companions

A 90-year-old father and his wife accepted part-time home aides, who quickly turned into trusted friends and brightened daily life.

Following a January heart attack that reduced his ability to move, a 90-year-old retired journalist and his 95-year-old wife were convinced by the daughter’s sister, a retired nurse, to try part-time home care. The agency, Still, supplied two aides—Jonathan and Junior—who began work while the narrator visited from New York. Jonathan’s cheerful manner and Junior’s thoughtful respect led the father to ask about their families and discuss sports, while they shared 1930s-40s jazz via Spotify.

The mother, initially reluctant about strangers, soon welcomed them at the door each day. Over roughly two months the carers have become trusted companions, showing how professional assistance can also provide social enrichment for seniors.
