Elderly motorcyclist killed on Western Highway pothole sparks road safety outcry

Peter Mason, a 71-year-old retired spray painter and founding president of the Eureka Social Riders Club, died after his motorcycle struck a pothole on the Western Highway near Trawalla and he was thrown over the handlebars. He was riding with another club member when the accident occurred on a stretch of highway long described as deteriorating, with two sizable potholes still present despite a botched repair attempt. Club spokesperson David Turner expressed the group’s grief and noted Mason’s wife is waiting for family arrivals before issuing a statement.

Police inspected the scene on Monday morning, confirming the potholes’ condition. Local rider Jimmy Mat Elkan described the area as hazardous for motorcyclists. Premier Ben Carroll announced a commitment to accelerate road maintenance for motorcyclist routes before the upcoming election, while Labor has suggested using minimum-security prisoners to fix potholes. Recent Auditor General data show thousands of potholes have opened on the Western Highway, with a significant portion of the road in very poor condition.
