Election Commission denies any plan to add parliamentary seats in Sarawak

Khairul Shahril Idrus, secretary of the Sarawak Election Commission, issued a statement rejecting claims that a draft document proposes new parliamentary constituencies for the state. He explained that the alleged document was misinterpreted and that no official plan to increase Sarawak’s seats is under consideration. The commission highlighted that the seventh Sarawak Redistricting Review (KSP) is currently on public exhibition until the end of September 2026.

Officials urged journalists to consult the official KSP portal for accurate data. Earlier reports had suggested an increase from 31 to 46 seats, which would raise Sarawak’s share of the Dewan Rakyat to one-third as promised under the 1963 Malaysia Agreement, but the commission said these figures are unfounded.
