Election Commission restricts transfers of officials handling Uttar Pradesh voter roll revision

The Election Commission has ordered that officials working on Uttar Pradesh's electoral roll revision cannot be moved between draft and final stages without its approval.

A press release from the Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer states that, per Section 13 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, staff engaged in the preparation, revision, and amendment of electoral rolls are on deputation to the Election Commission of India and operate under its control. The Election Commission has issued a directive that these officials may not be transferred from the draft publication stage to the final publication stage without its consent.

The Special Summary Revision process will follow a timeline that includes publishing a draft integrated roll, receiving and disposing of claims and objections, and issuing the final roll. The commission also emphasized the responsibility of the Electoral Registration Officer in each constituency to ensure accurate inclusion and exclusion of voters. The exercise covers Uttar Pradesh along with sixteen other states and union territories, with separate schedules for regions where intensive revisions are ongoing or pending.

Why it matters

Ensuring control over officials prevents irregularities in updating voter lists ahead of upcoming elections.
