Election-Denial Candidates Threaten Swing State Gubernatorial Races

Republican candidates who have backed Donald Trump’s false 2020 election claims are running for governor in key swing states, raising concerns about future election integrity.

A wave of Republican gubernatorial contenders in crucial swing states is aligning with Donald Trump’s baseless claim that the 2020 presidential election was stolen. These candidates have either publicly supported the “Big Lie” or actively participated in attempts to reverse the election outcome. In Pennsylvania, the race pits state Treasurer Stacy Garrity against Governor Josh Shapiro, with one outlet's poll showing Garrity trailing by 16 points among likely voters.

Despite the odds, Garrity obtained Trump’s endorsement after a phone conversation facilitated by an intermediary. The piece argues that if any of these election-denying candidates win, they could jeopardize the fairness of the 2028 presidential contest.

Why it matters

Governors who reject election results could undermine democratic processes in future national elections.
