Electric cars surpass one-third of new registrations in Switzerland and Liechtenstein

In September, electric vehicles accounted for more than a third of all newly registered passenger cars in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, according to Auto-Schweiz.

According to Auto-Schweiz, September saw 21,948 passenger cars newly registered in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, with pure electric vehicles comprising more than a third of that total - a historic first. Plug-in hybrid models also increased, accounting for roughly one-tenth of registrations, so that nearly half of all new cars offered some form of electric drive. The association links this trend to soaring fuel costs, which have been driven up by geopolitical crises and tight supply chains, affecting both individual commuters and corporate fleets.

With no national energy-cost relief programmes, buyers are turning to electric options. Conversely, registrations of cars with only gasoline or diesel engines fell further, representing only about a fifth of the market. Auto-Schweiz noted that, despite the recent gains, the overall market still lags behind European averages and the 2025 electric-mobility roadmap target of a 50 % share.

Why it matters

The surge in electric-vehicle registrations signals a rapid shift in Swiss mobility driven by high fuel costs and policy gaps.
