Eli Lilly moves into psychedelics with acquisition of Atai Beckley

Eli Lilly announced it will acquire biotech firm Atai Beckley, whose pipeline includes a synthetic 5-MeO-DMT nasal spray for severe depression.

Eli Lilly disclosed plans to purchase Atai Beckley, a biotech company that has yet to launch a marketed drug but is developing a nasal spray called BPL-003 that contains synthetic 5-MeO-DMT for treating severe depression. The move signals Lilly's entry into the rapidly expanding psychedelics sector, where previously only smaller firms and academic groups were active. Recent years have seen large pharma firms such as AbbVie and Johnson & Johnson invest in or acquire rights to psychedelic candidates, while venture funding for psychedelic biotech firms has multiplied, reaching over a billion dollars in the first half of the year.

Analysts describe the shift as a transition from a niche of “brash newcomers” to a mainstream industry. The therapeutic promise of psychedelics lies in their potential to enhance neuroplasticity and help patients reframe traumatic memories, a concept that dates back to research in the 1960s. While regulatory hurdles remain, the growing financial backing suggests the sector could soon deliver new treatments for depression and other mental-health conditions.
