Eliud Kipchoge shatters Melbourne Marathon record with 2:09:10 finish

Eliud Kipchoge won the Melbourne Marathon in 2 hours 9 minutes 10 seconds, two seconds faster than the previous best.

Eliud Kipchoge, the two-time Olympic champion, delivered a record-breaking performance at the Melbourne Marathon, completing the 42.2 km course in 2 hours 9 minutes 10 seconds, edging the prior record by two seconds. He broke away from the pack inside the last ten kilometres and, after securing victory, slowed to acknowledge the crowd on the half-lap of the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Australian runner Thomas Do Canto finished as runner-up with a time of 2:10:35, and New Zealander Camille French won the women's race in 2:28:25.

The event, sponsored by Nike, marked Kipchoge’s first appearance in Australia and forms part of his world-wide marathon tour that includes all seven continents. After the race, Kipchoge spent several minutes mingling with fans along the stadium perimeter. He last won a marathon in 2023.
