Elk Grove residents report e-bike riders hurling rocks at passing cars
A video captured a group of e-bike riders throwing rocks at vehicles on a busy road in Elk Grove, prompting police patrols and city council action.
Footage released by local media shows several young e-bike riders gathering rocks from a sidewalk and tossing them at cars traveling on a main road in Elk Grove. Resident Karen Vethekar recounted multiple incidents, noting that the riders followed her from a park and were later seen outside her house on security cameras. Elk Grove Police spokeswoman Julissa Ortiz confirmed the department received a complaint and is boosting patrols in the area.
City council members are scheduled to discuss new rules that would limit e-bike and scooter use on sidewalks, require audible warnings, and set a 15-mph speed cap on bikeways. Officials also highlighted a rise in e-bike related service calls, from seven in 2023 to 62 in 2025, and a total of 122 such calls so far in 2026. The proposed measures aim to curb reckless riding and protect pedestrians.
