Elon Musk promises to distribute SpaceX shares to every U.S. child next year
Elon Musk announced on X that he intends to give one SpaceX share to each child in the United States in the coming year.
In a recent X post, Elon Musk said he will provide one share of SpaceX to each child living in the United States beginning next year, calling it the first of many similar gestures. SpaceX, established by Musk in 2002, is a highly valued private company that operates the Starlink satellite broadband network and conducts launch and spacecraft missions. If carried out, the program would cover an estimated 72 million minors, representing roughly $10.5 billion in stock at today’s price.
Musk did not explain how the shares would be allocated or who would qualify. The proposal echoes the former Trump administration’s “Trump Accounts” initiative, which offered children born between 2025 and 2028 a federal seed deposit and investment account. Previously, SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell and her husband pledged shares for over two million children, but Musk had not publicly committed his own holdings before this announcement.
Why it matters
The pledge could transfer billions in private-company wealth to a whole generation of Americans, raising questions about logistics and equity.
