Elon Musk's America PAC harvests voter data through Vote Safe ads
Musk's America PAC is running ads that direct users to the Vote Safe site, which secretly collects extensive personal and voting information.
Elon Musk's America PAC has launched a costly advertising push, spending more than $180,000 to drive traffic to the Vote Safe website. The site, presented as a voter-information tool, covertly gathers a wide array of personal data, including names, birthdays, home addresses, email and phone numbers, IP addresses, browser details, geolocation, voter registration status, district information, and every click and page view.
While the site once prohibited sharing this data, a recent amendment now permits the PAC to sell or distribute it to business partners such as Facebook, Google, X, the Trade Desk, Increment Data and Iterable. This data-harvesting effort follows earlier digital campaigns that spent $800,000 targeting battleground states ahead of the 2024 presidential election, as well as a controversial direct-mail absentee ballot initiative in Georgia that violated state law and resulted in a formal reprimand. Critics argue the practice exploits voters’ trust and raises serious privacy concerns.
Why it matters
It shows how political fundraising can exploit personal data, raising privacy and election integrity concerns.
