Emergency room visits for e-bike injuries surge dramatically, especially among children

ER visits linked to e-bike accidents jumped 760% overall and 1,810% for kids between January 2023 and August 2026, according to health data from Truveta.

A recent study using Truveta's health data found that emergency department visits tied to e-bike crashes increased by 760% overall and an astonishing 1,810% among children from January 2023 through August 2026. The dataset, which includes records for over 140 million patients, identified 4,769 e-bike-related visits, while traditional bicycles accounted for 63,811 visits but only a 7.9% rise in rate. About one-third of all cases involved head or neck injuries, and traumatic brain injuries were reported in roughly 5.8% of e-bike cases versus 5.6% for regular bikes; the proportion rose to 7.8% for kids on e-bikes.

Researchers, including Dr. Karen Gilbert Farrar, note that growing e-bike popularity, rental programs, and possibly reduced helmet use or multiple riders may explain the surge. Fractures were also more frequent in e-bike incidents, likely due to higher speeds and heavier frames. The study lacked data on overall riding frequency, limiting precise risk assessment.

Why it matters

The sharp rise in e-bike injuries, especially among children, highlights emerging safety risks as these vehicles become more common.
