Emus Take to the Water in Western Australia's Murchison River
Tour operators captured four emus swimming across the Murchison River, surprising onlookers and sparking online fascination.
During a routine tour on the Murchison River, Kalbarri Cruises' Tracy Grosvenor recorded four emus swimming across the water, a sight that quickly went viral online. The video, now viewed by over five million people, highlights the birds' distinctive neck movements as they navigate the river. The Grosvenors, who have operated tours on the river for more than 14 years, have often observed emus on the banks but had never witnessed them swimming before.
Local wildlife carer Jaydene Bartley noted that emus regularly use water for bathing and cooling, especially during summer temperatures that can reach 40 degrees Celsius. She added that the birds are strong swimmers and will cross large water bodies when searching for food. The incident has drawn comparisons to folklore and generated widespread interest on social media.
