Enable Android’s built-in theft-prevention tools to safeguard your device
Google’s Android platform now includes AI-driven anti-theft features such as motion-based locking and offline device lock, which can be activated through the Theft Protection menu.
Google has expanded Android’s security suite with AI-assisted anti-theft measures that act before a device is compromised. When a phone is abruptly moved or its SIM is removed, the new motion-sensing Theft Detection Lock automatically secures the screen. If a thief disables data or switches to Airplane Mode, the Offline Device Lock initiates a short countdown before locking, even without an internet connection.
A Remote Lock service lets owners lock their phone from any browser by entering the device number on android.com/lock. These settings are integrated into Google Play Services on devices running Android 10 or later, though low-end Android Go phones, some tablets, and devices lacking full Play Services may miss some functions. Activation paths differ: Samsung users go through Settings → Security and Privacy → Lost Device Protection → Theft Protection, while Pixel devices use Settings → Security & Privacy → Device Unlock → Theft Protection. Proper use also requires a screen lock such as a PIN or biometrics, which the system checks periodically via Identity Check.
Why it matters
Enabling these tools helps prevent data loss and protects personal information if a phone is stolen.
