Energinet to Notify Hundreds of Grid Connection Applicants by November Amid Capacity Strain

State-owned grid operator Energinet will inform several hundred electricity consumers and producers about their connection requests by November, citing limited network capacity.

In a Wednesday press release, state-owned grid operator Energinet announced it now has a clear picture of the capacity requirements on Denmark’s overloaded electricity network. Based on this assessment, the company will begin replying to “several hundred” applications from electricity users and generators by November, starting with projects in categories 1 and 2 that include critical public services and initiatives linked to the green transition.

Søren Dupont Kristensen, the acting CEO, acknowledged that rising demand prevents the operator from granting connections at the pace many applicants desire, but stressed that the transmission system can still meet the needs of ordinary households, small enterprises and essential sectors such as health, defence and emergency services. Projects in categories 3 (energy storage) and 4 (large consumers like data centres) are expected to face limited or no access, reflecting a political emergency plan that pushes big data centres to the back of the queue. Business organisations such as Dansk Industri, Dansk Erhverv and Green Power Denmark welcomed the forthcoming decisions but warned that the persistent capacity gap threatens Denmark’s ability to develop future industries and jobs, calling for immediate dialogue with authorities.

Why it matters

Delays in grid connections could stall Denmark's renewable energy rollout and economic expansion.
