Energy price surge from Gulf conflict pushes German inflation toward three percent

Higher oil and gas costs linked to the Iran war have lifted German consumer prices, with inflation nearing the three-percent mark.

The war in Iran has heightened energy prices, tightening household budgets across Germany. With the Hormuz Strait still largely blocked, drivers face higher gasoline prices and homeowners see larger heating bills. After the two-month fuel tax rebate expired at the end of June, August saw consumer prices increase relative to the previous year.

The Ifo Institute projects overall inflation of 2.8 percent for 2026 and a possible rise to 3.0 percent in 2027. Core inflation, excluding food and energy, held steady at 2.4 percent, while food price growth was modest at 0.1 percent. Persistent high energy costs risk spilling over into other sectors as transport and cooling expenses climb.
