Energy regulator reports sharp rise in electricity and gas prices for new contracts

The Energy Regulatory Office says wholesale electricity and gas prices have jumped, pushing up indicative price bands for October contracts.

The Energy Regulatory Office released its October indicative price overview, showing higher wholesale prices for electricity and gas than in September. One-year electricity contracts in the D02d tariff now range between 3681 and 3827 CZK per megawatt hour, up from 3152-3302 CZK in September, while two-year contracts rose to 3212-3379 CZK/MWh. Gas prices for a typical family home on a one-year fix now sit between 1952 and 2016 CZK/MWh, compared with 1590-1652 CZK/MWh previously; two-year gas fixes moved from 1295-1375 CZK to 1572-1654 CZK/MWh.

Several suppliers, including E.ON, Pražská plynárenská, and others, have already adjusted their retail tariffs accordingly. The regulator notes that only consumers signing new contracts or whose fixed terms are ending will see higher bills; those with ongoing fixed rates remain unchanged.

Why it matters

Rising wholesale energy costs could increase household bills for new customers and affect overall consumer spending.
