Enforcement Directorate serves summons to Kerala opposition leader over CMRL money-laundering probe

The Enforcement Directorate posted a summons at Pinarayi Vijayan’s home, ordering him to appear for questioning on Oct 23 in a CMRL-related money-laundering case.

On Saturday, Enforcement Directorate officers from Kochi pasted a formal summons outside the home of Kerala’s Leader of Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan, instructing him to attend questioning on Oct 23 regarding a money-laundering investigation linked to Cochin Mineral and Rutile Limited. The summons was issued after the agency filed a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, prompted by a recent FIR lodged by state police following a Kerala High Court order.

Vijayan was not present, as he was attending a party conference in Kannur; senior CPI figure V Sivankutty later arrived, denounced the service method, and argued that the matter should await a Supreme Court ruling. The ED claims that CMRL made false payments of ₹2.78 crore to Exalogic Solutions, a company owned by Vijayan’s daughter Veena T, and that related notes point to fund transfers to Dubai. The Keralam Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau has also filed FIRs against Vijayan’s family, including son-in-law P A Mohamed Riyas. Vijayan has petitioned the Supreme Court to overturn the High Court’s directive to register the case.

Why it matters

The summons ties a senior opposition figure to a high-profile money-laundering probe, raising questions about political accountability and legal process in Kerala.
