Engie targets €3 billion to boost Indian renewable capacity to 7 GW by 2030
Engie plans to invest roughly €3 billion in India, aiming to raise its renewable portfolio from about 2 GW to 7 GW by 2030.
Engie announced a €3 billion investment plan for India, with the goal of expanding its renewable energy holdings from roughly 2 GW to 7 GW by 2030. To achieve this, the company aims to commission about 1 GW of new projects each year, financed through a mix of debt and equity. It has applied to set up a treasury operation in GIFT City, Gujarat, to facilitate project funding.
Engie identified grid-connection bottlenecks and land-acquisition challenges as primary obstacles, noting that battery energy storage systems can help mitigate solar-generation congestion. While India currently represents a modest share of Engie's worldwide assets, the firm seeks to move the country into its list of leading markets alongside France, the UK, Belgium and Brazil. The strategy reflects Engie's broader commitment to support India's renewable energy ambitions.
Why it matters
The plan could significantly increase clean power capacity in India, shaping the country's energy transition and Engie's global growth.
