Engine fault triggers fatal Army Cobra crash during training in Gapyeong County
A sudden engine failure caused an Army AH-1S Cobra to crash during a training drill in Gapyeong County on Feb. 9, killing two warrant officers.
A BO-105 helicopter carrying five members of the Flying Doctor Service crashed near Long Lellang Short Runway Airport in Ulu Baram, killing pilot Zainol Afriq, Dr Ainul Baraah Kamarudin, assistant medical officer Alexson Adit and nurses Debra Moset and Jessie Paya. Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad stated there is no reason to suspend the service, emphasizing its role in universal health coverage. Hartal Doktor Kontrak, representing contract doctors, demanded a temporary suspension until ageing helicopters, facilities, maintenance records and operating procedures are fully inspected.
The Malaysian Medical Association urged authorities to answer when greater safeguards for healthcare workers will be implemented. The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia confirmed the crash occurred at about 3.40 pm, and the Health Ministry noted it lacks direct maintenance data because helicopters are leased under contract.
