Engineer dissident Gheorghe Ursu detained and later killed, prompting convictions of security officials
Gheorghe Ursu, an engineer and dissident, was detained after a coworker reported him and died while in custody, leading to later convictions of militia members and a former intelligence officer.
In the mid-1980s, engineer and poet Gheorghe Ursu was taken into custody after a work colleague reported him for possessing foreign currency. He was confined alongside known violent recidivists and endured daily questioning by the Securitate, which employed harsh methods. While detained, Ursu suffered fatal injuries, though authorities listed a non-violent medical condition as the cause of death.
Subsequent legal proceedings saw a fellow detainee convicted for the homicide in 2000. In 2003, former militia officers Tudor Stănică and Mihail Creangă were sentenced to lengthy terms, and in 2005 former SRI general Eugen Grigorescu received a prison term for his involvement in the disappearance of Ursu's diary.
