Engineered Cockroaches Could Deliver First Aid in Disaster Zones
Researchers at the University of Queensland and UNSW have created cyborg cockroaches that can navigate rubble and inject medication, aiming to assist rescue teams.
A joint project by the University of Queensland and the University of New South Wales has produced a bio-robotic platform named Paraborg, which turns a 87-mm Queensland burrowing cockroach into a miniature search-and-rescue unit. The insects are equipped with either a tiny camera for victim assessment or a spring-loaded syringe that delivers medication after a chemical reaction generates carbon dioxide pressure. Researchers control the roach by applying electrical pulses to sensors on its antennae and cerci, allowing precise direction and speed adjustments.
Laboratory trials recorded a 95% injection accuracy within 150 mm of a target and a 72% overall task completion rate, including coordinated camera-and-injector teamwork. While the prototype performed well in controlled settings, the team acknowledges that actual disaster environments present additional challenges. Lead bio-robotics researcher Tan Vo Doan hopes that, with further funding and field testing, cyborg insects could become a practical aid for rescuers in the next five to ten years.
