England faces looming water crunch as drought hits farms and households

Severe summer dryness has forced the Environment Agency to curb river water withdrawals, leaving farms like Daniel Sizer’s in Suffolk with ruined crops and highlighting a projected national shortfall of five billion litres per day by 2055.

In early August, farmer Daniel Sizer received a notice from his local water board allowing only a single night of irrigation, after the Environment Agency suspended river water withdrawals to protect wildlife during an unprecedented dry period. The shortage has left half of Sizer’s 300-hectare Suffolk farm ruined, underscoring a broader threat that England could lack five billion litres of water each day by 2055 - enough to fill Wembley Stadium four and a half times.

Analysts point to a rise in per-capita use from 136.5 litres, far above Denmark’s 97 litres, and argue that modest reductions such as shorter showers could cut demand by nearly a billion litres daily. While water companies have run campaigns to curb usage, public distrust limits their impact, and officials suggest government-led pricing reforms may be more effective. Business consumption, especially by a small number of large users, remains high, with regulators beginning to eliminate volume-based discounts. To bolster supply, plans for ten new reservoirs by 2050 are under way, though site selection and environmental standards pose hurdles, and leak-detection innovations using fibre-optic monitoring promise substantial savings if deployed nationwide.
