A new National Roads Policing Coordination Centre will unite police data and technology to curb illegal number plates used by criminal groups across England.
England is creating a centralized policing hub, the National Roads Policing Coordination Centre, to combat illegal vehicle number plates. The centre will pool information from police forces nationwide and deploy new equipment, like goggles that reveal plates altered to avoid camera detection. Such plates, whether cloned from legitimate registrations or made invisible with transparent film, are commonly used by organised crime to dodge penalties and transport stolen items.
The Department for Transport highlighted that drivers with incorrect or missing plates can be fined up to £1,000. Policing and crime minister Sarah Jones emphasized that the offence is not victimless and that the coordinated effort aims to track offenders more quickly. Deputy national co-ordinator Ch Supt Marc Clothier praised the intelligence-led approach for both tackling offenders and educating lawful drivers.
