England sees Covid cases double and hospital admissions surge amid XFG variant spread
Covid infections in England have more than doubled in a month, with hospital admissions rising five-fold, linked to the XFG (Stratus) variant.
England is experiencing a sharp rise in Covid-19, with monthly infections reaching 4,589, more than double the previous month and the highest level since October last year. Hospital admissions have escalated from 950 in August to 4,939 in September, a five-fold increase. The surge is linked to the XFG (also called "Stratus") variant, which first emerged in South East Asia and has spread throughout North America and Europe.
Official UKHSA data, based on severe cases reported by NHS England, likely underestimates the true number of infections, as many milder cases remain undiagnosed. Front-line doctors describe a mix of flu-like symptoms and gastrointestinal complaints among patients. Despite the rise, overall case numbers and deaths remain below the peaks of previous years, and one outlet autumn vaccine is designed to target the circulating strains.
Why it matters
The rapid increase in Covid cases and hospitalisations could strain the NHS during the autumn season.
