Environment Minister condemns Google subsidiary's breach of Finnish impact-assessment rules
Environment and Climate Minister Sari Multala said Google’s Finnish arm, Tuike Finland Oy, violated environmental law by proceeding with data-center work without a completed impact assessment.
Finland’s Environment and Climate Minister Sari Multala criticised Google’s local representative, Tuike Finland Oy, for advancing data-center preparations in Muhos and Kajaani without completing the required environmental impact assessment. The Licensing and Supervision Authority (LVV) instructed the company to stop all preparatory work, including tree clearing, land grading, excavation and road construction, by 23 October.
Multala described the breach of the impact-assessment law as “a serious place” and said it could hinder the projects and invite court appeals. She noted that the lack of assessment removes a key basis for evaluating alternative implementation options. The minister emphasized that all companies must comply with Finnish regulations and act responsibly, especially as data-center projects face growing public scrutiny. LVV’s order aims to ensure that environmental considerations are addressed before any permanent changes are made.
Why it matters
The case highlights enforcement of environmental rules on large tech projects and could affect future data-center developments in Finland.
