Environment Minister flags lavish spending by National Meteorology Agency

Environment Minister Diana Buzoianu said a control audit uncovered the use of official cards to buy luxury clothing, cosmetics and accessories for the National Meteorology Agency.

Diana Buzoianu, Romania’s Environment Minister, disclosed that a control inspection found multiple official cards of the National Meteorology Agency being used for purchases of luxury goods, including designer underwear, perfumes, cosmetics, scented candles, smart watches and ornamental plant pots. The audit listed expenditures for 2025 and 2026, with amounts reaching over a hundred thousand lei for clothing and accessories in each year.

The minister said the report will be sent to the Prosecutor’s Office linked to the High Court of Cassation and Justice. She added that, given the seriousness of the misuse of public funds, the agency’s management should step down, and a legal team will be convened to explore further actions.
