EPFO 3.0 implementation pushed back a year, risking gig worker benefit delays

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation’s 3.0 platform is expected to be launched a year later after tendering ends, which could postpone social-security benefits for gig, platform, unorganised and construction workers.

Sources say the EPFO’s upgraded 3.0 system will not be operational until the tendering process is finished and an additional year passes. This timeline shift may hold up the rollout of pension and other social-security schemes aimed at gig-economy, platform, informal and construction sector employees. The delay could affect the timing of contributions and benefit payouts for these groups. Officials have not provided a new definitive launch date.

Why it matters

A later EPFO 3.0 launch could postpone pension and benefit payments for millions of gig and informal workers.
