Episcopal Bishop Mariann Budde Announces Retirement After 15 Years of Service

Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde of Washington's Episcopal Diocese said she will step down after fifteen years, beginning the search for her successor.

Mariann Edgar Budde, the first woman to lead the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, announced her intention to retire after fifteen years in office. In a written statement she said the decision was not taken lightly and that she will miss the diocese she has served. Budde highlighted that choosing a new diocesan bishop involves a lengthy and demanding process, and the diocese will begin the election in early 2028.

The consecration of her successor is expected to follow later in the same year. No further motivations for her resignation were disclosed in the letter. Budde previously criticized President Donald Trump during his 2025 inauguration service, a stance that later led to a public dispute with the president.

Why it matters

The departure of a pioneering bishop will shape the future leadership and direction of a major U.S. religious community.
