EPP grapples with internal split over right-wing cooperation ahead of 2029 elections
The European People's Party has launched a “Win2029” task force to craft a new platform, while members debate whether to ally with far-right parties or adopt tougher policies.
Manfred Weber, president of the European People's Party, announced the formation of a Win2029 task force to develop a competitive election programme for 2029. The group, led by Spanish MEP Esteban González Ponss, will begin discussions in Sicily and continue through a party congress in Rome. Party officials report growing tension over whether to form alliances with far-right parties or to adopt stricter stances on migration, climate and social issues.
Romanian deputy Zsigfrint Mureșan warned that the main polarisation will be between anti-European populists and the EPP, while Spanish representative Pedro Lopez de Pamblo argued that the party must offer alternatives to voters. Finnish MEP Sirpa Pietikäinen highlighted the need to clarify the party’s identity as centre-right or right-leaning, and German MEP Dennis Radtke questioned linking right-wing success solely to migration policy.
