Equinor grounds AW189 helicopter as staff report hearing problems from AW139

Equinor has taken the AW189 helicopter out of service after staff on the Gjøa platform reported extensive hearing issues linked to the smaller AW139 model.

A review of Equinor's internal reporting system revealed 170 noise-related complaints tied to the AW139 helicopter, while the larger AW189 has been grounded for further upgrades. On the Gjøa platform, roughly 50 of the 100 base staff are being monitored for health effects, and 21 are currently on sick leave, forcing the site to operate at a reduced level. The company acknowledges tinnitus, ear pain, nausea and other discomforts among employees and contractors, and asserts that all cases are being addressed.

Equinor stresses that the helicopters meet aviation authority approvals and that noise measurements for the AW139 are lower than for the AW189. The firm will roll out active noise-reducing hearing protection following recommendations from a joint safety working group.

Why it matters

Helicopter noise is affecting offshore workers' health and limiting platform operations.
