ERC debates Gabriel Rufián's role as early elections loom
Esquerra Republicana is weighing whether Gabriel Rufián will lead its list for the upcoming snap election, while internal debates continue over strategy.
Ahead of a sudden election, Esquerra Republicana faces internal tension between its Madrid spokesperson Gabriel Rufián and the core leadership led by Oriol Junqueras. Although the party publicly backs Rufián as its top candidate, he has entered a period of reflection, insisting on uniting the left and seeking broader input before confirming his role. Secretary General Elisenda Alamany reiterated that Rufián is the party’s strongest option, yet acknowledged his desire for dialogue.
Candidates must submit their candidacy and collect endorsements amounting to 5% of the membership by Sunday, after which the party will either confirm Rufián or open a primary if other contenders emerge. The executive board will meet this week to activate the internal list-building process, while the party maintains its opposition stance toward the governing coalition.
