ERCOT chief's contract lifts pay to $6.5 million, eclipsing peers
ERCOT president and CEO Pablo Vegas will receive $6.5 million in 2027 under a new six-year deal, making him one of the highest-paid grid operators in the United States.
At its regular board meeting, ERCOT and the Public Utility Commission authorized a six-year extension of Pablo Vegas’s contract that will deliver $6.5 million in compensation for 2027, the highest salary among independent system operators in the country. The package includes a base salary of $1,162,716, short-term incentives equal to the base amount, long-term incentives worth 180 % of the base, and a $1.4 million make-whole payment tied to his 2022 agreement.
Without that payment, total pay would be $5,085,398; the full amount reflects an over-80 % rise from his 2024 earnings of $3.6 million. The deal eclipses the prior record held by John Bear of MISO, who earned $3.7 million in 2024. ERCOT, a nonprofit funded mainly by a $0.61 per MWh administration fee, is contending with expanding data-center connections, transmission bottlenecks in West Texas and Houston, and a 40 % increase in residential rates since 2020.
Vegas, who succeeded Bill Magness after the 2021 winter-storm crisis, previously held senior roles at NiSource and AEP Texas. Neither ERCOT nor the commission offered comment on the salary hike.
