Eric Ciotti calls for removal of Saint-Denis mayor over alleged incitement
Eric Ciotti asked the Council of Ministers to revoke Bally Bagayoko’s mayoral mandate, accusing him of stoking violence during school protests.
Eric Ciotti, a RN lawmaker and mayor of Nice, petitioned the Council of Ministers to strip Bally Bagayoko of his mayoral duties, alleging the Saint-Denis mayor incites violence in the context of nationwide school blockades. He cited the council’s authority to act when a mayor “betrays his charge,” and warned that a left-wing LFI administration would become a “blood-thirsty dictatorship.” The Paris police prefect, Patrice Faure, has already opened a judicial inquiry into Bagayoko for suspected provocation to commit a crime.
Bagayoko, who supports the protesting students, previously said violence can be legitimate at times but should be avoided when possible. He later posted on X condemning police force and urging youths to stay united, non-violent, and not to respond to provocations. Ciotti also expressed doubt about Prime Minister Lecornu’s sincerity in the National Assembly and criticized any double-talk regarding LFI.
Why it matters
The request could set a precedent for removing elected officials over political speech, raising concerns about democratic norms.
