Ertzaintza detains two Spanish nationals in suspected terrorism case

The Basque police’s elite intelligence unit arrested a 34-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman, both Spanish citizens, on suspicion of terrorism after a checkpoint in Eskoriatza uncovered sensitive material.

The Ertzaintza’s central intelligence office reported a serious police operation after a routine check in Eskoriatza, Gipuzkoa, revealed three persons in possession of highly sensitive material, such as data on police forces and a possible site storing weapons and explosives. Among them, a 34-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman, both holding Spanish nationality, were escorted to the Irún police headquarters with legal counsel and placed in custody.

The unit opened a terrorism investigation and has been working closely with the Audiencia Nacional, which will take over the case once the initial statements are recorded. Officials clarified that the incident is unrelated to jihadist motives. The regional branch of the Basque Nationalist Party, led by Aitor Esteban, voiced “absolute concern” and urged the Basque society to preserve peace, condemning any regression to past violence. The PNV also called for respect for the ongoing judicial process and highlighted the Ertzaintza’s role.

Why it matters

The arrests signal a rare terrorism-related probe in the Basque region, raising security and political sensitivities.
