ESA's Cluster Satellites Near Final Atmospheric Reentry After 26 Years in Space

The four Cluster spacecraft are set for their last controlled reentries, with Tango slated to burn up tonight, concluding a mission that lasted well beyond its original five-year design.

ESA’s Cluster quartet, launched in 2000 on two Soyuz rockets from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, is now in its final disposal stage. The mission, originally planned for two years to map Earth’s magnetosphere in three dimensions, was repeatedly extended and ultimately outlived its five-year design life. Battery degradation during each eclipse forced the spacecraft into uncontrolled shutdowns, but ground teams engineered solutions to revive them and extend operations.

After a decade of such fixes, the satellites were gradually steered toward remote oceanic reentries, with Salsa and Rumba already disposed of in 2024 and 2025. Samba lost contact on 31 August and reentered at 21:39:38 UTC, and Tango is scheduled to disintegrate at 21:30:31 UTC tonight. The final reentry will provide valuable data on how spacecraft materials behave under extreme re-entry conditions, a topic highlighted by ESA’s senior debris analyst Stijn Lemmens.
