ESA warns of rising risk from surviving space debris re-entries

The European Space Agency’s 2026 report highlights an increasing danger of ground accidents caused by fragments that survive atmospheric re-entry, driven by more satellite launches.

A 2026 ESA report warns that fragments surviving re-entry are creating a growing threat of accidents on the ground as satellite launches accelerate. While the chance of such an event is still modest compared with everyday hazards, the trend is driven by the cumulative impact of more launches, larger constellations and increased re-entries. The agency recommends expanding controlled re-entries and adopting technologies that ensure satellites disintegrate more completely during descent.

It also stresses that debris levels will continue to climb even if launch rates fall, since fragmentation generates waste faster than natural atmospheric burn-up. Over the previous year, more than 300 launches placed over four thousand objects into orbit, including large satellite constellations at various altitudes. For every ten objects sent to space daily in 2025, three re-entered intact, indicating a modest shift toward shorter orbital lifetimes.
