Escalation of Iran conflict sparks alarm over civilian casualties at wedding
Iran reported 18 fatalities and over 100 injuries after a U.S. strike, including a wedding attack that left four dead and dozens wounded.
Iran’s health ministry announced that U.S. strikes on Tuesday night resulted in 18 deaths and 108 injuries nationwide. Among the casualties, a wedding ceremony near the Hormuz Strait suffered four fatalities and 67 wounded, according to the Iranian Red Crescent. The latest hostilities come after Iran launched missile and drone attacks on targets it said were U.S. assets in Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait and Iraq, ending a lull since July.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep alarm over the civilian toll and urged an immediate halt to the fighting. The U.S. military denied targeting civilians, while satellite imagery verified damage to a building and a nearby utility tower. Regional traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has been threatened by Iran in response to the strikes.
Why it matters
Civilian deaths risk widening the conflict and destabilizing a key oil transit route.
