Escaped armed robber Amine Oualane faces murder charges as alleged DZ Mafia leader

Amine Oualane, captured after months on the run, appeared before the Aix-en-Provence assizes accused of multiple homicides linked to his 2020 escape and identified by prosecutors as a leading member of the DZ Mafia.

After a six-month and seventeen-day flight, Amine Oualane was taken into custody by the Marseille BRI and returned to the prison at Luynes. First convicted in 2013 for roughly ten armed robberies, he escaped during a leave granted for a job interview and remained at large until his recent capture. In the courtroom of the Aix-en-Provence assizes, he is charged with four homicides and a attempted homicide that occurred during his 2020 evasion.

The Marseille public prosecutor’s office labels him a principal member of the DZ Mafia, a criminal organization implicated in drug trafficking. The case highlights perceived shortcomings in the French justice system’s ability to neutralize repeat violent offenders. Observers note that his ascent within the gang while incarcerated reflects broader concerns about prison-based criminal networks.

Why it matters

The case illustrates the difficulty French authorities have in stopping repeat violent drug traffickers and dismantling prison-linked criminal groups.
