Escaped murderer appears in Irish court after capture at Donegal caravan site
Gary Anderson, a life-sentenced murderer who fled while on temporary release, was brought before Letterkenny District Court after being caught at a caravan site in Donegal.
Gary Anderson, a 29-year-old serving a life term for the 2023 murder of Karol Kelly, absconded from Maghaberry Prison while on temporary release for his father's funeral and evaded capture for more than a week. Gardaí located him at the Fahan Marina Caravan and Campsite in Donegal at 1.44 pm on Wednesday, arresting him in a black sweatshirt and tracksuit. Detective Garda Jason Conroy presented the charge, citing Section 3(1) of the Criminal Law (Jurisdiction) Act, 1976, and Anderson did not respond to the arrest or charge.
No bail application was filed; his lawyer Kevin Winters asked Judge Emile Daly to recommend a prison other than Castlerea due to “other parties involved.” The judge adjourned the matter, scheduling a video link appearance on 28 September.
