Estonia mulls delaying Rail Baltica finish to 2034 to tap more EU funds
Estonia is debating whether to push its Rail Baltica segment's completion from 2030 to 2034 to increase EU funding and lower domestic costs.
As part of the 2027 budget talks, Estonia is considering postponing the completion of its Rail Baltica section from the originally targeted 2030 to 2034. Prime Minister Kristen Michal affirmed that the nation has the technical capacity to finish by 2030, yet doing so would require a larger share of domestic financing. Extending the build period would let Estonia draw more heavily on EU funding, which is available through 2034.
The government plans to announce its final stance next Thursday, aligning with a joint Baltic position. Kristina Kallas, chair of Eesti 200 and Minister of Education and Research, highlighted the importance of coordinating construction timelines with the EU's disbursement schedule. Estonia currently leads the Baltic partners in progress on the railway.
