Estonia must tighten drone procurement as defense spending grows

Kristian Sirp stresses that Estonia’s larger defence budget brings a duty to choose technology wisely, particularly as drone capabilities evolve at a pace that outstrips conventional procurement. He points out that a system deemed optimal today may be outdated by the time a contract is signed, making evidence-based testing essential. Prime Minister Kristen Michal has highlighted the need for multilayered drone defences and a supportive environment for domestic innovators.

Recent NATO trials in Latvia and the EU’s Action Plan on Drone and Counter-Drone Security illustrate a broader move toward rapid assessment of what works in real conditions. Sirp warns that without unified standards, Estonia could end up with incompatible sensors and fragmented operational pictures. He proposes a permanent, controlled-environment testing capability to evaluate performance across critical sites such as ports and hospitals. This approach would help the state act as a “smart customer,” reducing costly errors and benefiting local firms that can prove their solutions in real-world settings.
