Estonia receives first batch of 70-km HIMARS rockets from the United States

Estonia has taken delivery of 70-kilometre range rockets for its HIMARS artillery system, fulfilling the original contract for that ammunition.

Martin Herem confirmed that Estonia has received the 70-kilometre range rockets intended for its HIMARS multiple launch rocket system, satisfying the ammunition component of the original procurement deal. The United States had paused deliveries earlier due to the Iraq conflict, leaving longer-range ATACMS and other munitions on hold. Herem said the remaining launchers for the Korean K239 Chunmoo will arrive next year, with hopes that additional ammunition could follow, though early 2028 is more likely.

Estonia's defence forces operate six HIMARS launchers and, following a recent contract with the Center for Defense Investments and Lockheed Martin, will add three more units in 2027. The interchangeable rocket pods can carry various payloads, from GMLRS rockets to Precision Strike Missiles and ATACMS. He also indicated that further artillery and loitering-munition supplies, some approaching 100 kilometres in range, are expected in the coming years.

Why it matters

The delivery strengthens Estonia's short-range firepower and marks progress in its NATO-aligned defence buildup.
