Estonia says it can shut border instantly if Russia orders full mobilization

During a press conference, Prime Minister Kristen Michal confirmed that Estonia can instantly close its border if Russia announces a general mobilization, noting that the Police and Border Guard Board and the interior ministry can act swiftly. He stressed the importance of regular security updates and mentioned that crossing hours have already been reduced and full customs inspections introduced. Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna explained that the security cabinet routinely evaluates potential Russian actions and that a mobilization would likely heighten domestic unrest in Russia and strain European visa systems.

He highlighted Estonia’s leadership in EU visa sanctions, including bans on combatants, and warned that continued issuance of Russian visas by some EU states could amplify security risks. Both leaders called on European partners to monitor rising tensions and coordinate appropriate responses, emphasizing that any border measures would follow the principle of reciprocity.
