Estonian insurers add war-risk coverage, raising some home premiums without consent

Seesam Insurance introduced a default war-risk add-on, causing some customers' home premiums to jump by up to 30% unless they opt out.

Seesam Insurance has begun bundling war-risk protection into its home policies, leading to unexpected premium hikes for some policyholders; a 200-square-metre home saw its annual cost rise from €190 to €245. The insurer explains the add-on covers damage from stray military drones, missiles, shells and mines, with monthly fees ranging from about €1 for small apartments to €3 for average detached houses. The new coverage was applied automatically, and customers are now required to contact the company if they wish to decline it.

Similar war-risk products are being offered by other local insurers, though companies like Swedbank and Elama do not levy extra charges for the same protection. Industry representatives say such tailored packages aim to keep overall insurance costs stable while addressing emerging security risks.

Why it matters

Automatic war-risk add-ons can raise household insurance costs and force consumers to actively opt out.
